More than any time before, payers, consumer groups, and legislators, are putting what therapists do under scrutiny. At the root of many controversies currently afflicting therapy is the important question of what works. Is its efficacy based on the singular curative powers of specialized techniques or do other variables account for the change occurring in therapy? As it turns out, the answer is not to be found in the different languages, theories, or procedural differences of the field's warring camps. Instead, it lies in the pantheoretical or common factors--the ingredients of effective therapy, shared by all orientations. Bypassing theoretical cleverness and technical wizardry, this workshop provides a detailed recipe for enhancing what works based upon the empirically validated guidelines of how change actually happens in therapy. |

clinical experience. He is director of the Heart and Soul of Change Project (www.heartandsoulofchange.com), a practice-driven, training and research initiative that focuses on what works in therapy, and more importantly, how to deliver it on the front lines via client based outcome feedback. Barry has over one hundred publications, including fifteen books. His latest books: The Heroic Client (2nd edition, Jossey Bass, 2004); Heroic Clients, Heroic Agencies: Partners for Change (2nd ed. 2010 E Edition available at www.heartandsoulofchange.com); Brief Intervention for School Problems (Guilford, 2007); the 2nd edition of the Heart and Soul of Change: Delivering What Works (APA,2010); and the brand new On Becoming a Better Therapist (APA, 2010). He is the co-developer of the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS), Session Rating Scale (SRS), Child ORS, and Child SRS, measures designed to give clients the voice they deserve as well as provide clients, clinicians, administrators, and payers with feedback about the client’s response to services, thus enabling more effective care tailored to client preferences. Because of his self help books, he has appeared on "Oprah,” “The View," and several other national TV programs. His latest self help book, What’ s Right With You, challenges the business as usual mentality of “What’s wrong with you” and instead demonstrates how to rally natural resources and resiliencies to overcome life challenges. Barry conducts seminars internationally in hopes of inciting insurrection against practices that diminish clients and encouraging therapists to establish their own identity. Attachment Theory provides a descriptive and explanatory framework for the discussion of affectionate relationships between human beings. Children who experience neglect or abuse inflicted by a primary caregiver will more often than not have their normal development of secure attachment disrupted. The consequence of this is potential life-long psychological issues and disturbances. As the number of children growing up in single-parent, dysfunctional, and adopted families are on the rise, this specialised skill would be very useful for helping professionals who are working in this area. |

Play of Life is different from the conventional talk-based method as it utilises a miniature theatre kit (uses small human figures on a stage). The purpose of this theatre kit is to allow clients to reproduce and see their life and relationships in a challenging 3-dimensional format. As a method, it allows the client to identify complex issues. It simplifies issues by depicting them in a visual 3-dimensional way, thus going beyond mere verbal communication. It is a creative and innovative tool which can be easily added to a practitioner’s repertoire. This tool will be able to guide helping professionals to address common social problems such as emotional trauma, behavioural problems such as addiction, marriage troubles, conflicts, anger, etc. As such, it has a wide applicability, from social service to education sectors.
